1.

Move back to the country somewhere. Somewhere with fields and small towns and people who he'll know and who'll know him. Because in Colorado Springs he has maybe half a dozen people he considers to be his friends, not one of whom is going to stick around there forever, and he does not want to die alone because no-one even noticed he wasn't around.

2.

Buy a plane. Which is the one advantage of being hopelessly over-worked – his savings account has never looked healthier. It won't make up for having to give up going through the gate, but it'll be a good enough substitute.

3.

Get a dog. His family's never had pets, and he's either been moving around or in another country too much to ever have one of his own. Too much to ever think about having kids either, but that's one of those things he accepted a long time ago would never happen.

4.

Donate his time to a charity. He's not that picky which, not yet, but he's spent his entire life doing what he does, okay, mostly because he loves it, but also because he feels like he's maybe making things a little better, or a little safer. He can't see himself giving that up.

5.

Get a mortgage. Which is another thing he's never stuck around long enough to do. A joint mortgage, his and John's names on a piece of paper that says ‘this is for real. This is forever.' Wake up next to John and go to sleep next to him, and argue over who used the last of the coffee, and conspire with their neighbors to plan dorky birthday parties, and dress up to go out for dinner on their anniversary, and spend the holidays with their nieces and nephews – great-nieces and nephews probably by then. Have that life.
