When Atlantis comes to Earth, Vala talks someone into letting her go out to the city every few days. It's not even that difficult, with all the people going back and forth. Even Mitchell caves after the second time, when she points out that everyone's too busy working on the super-weapon the Odyssey brought back to send SG1 on any missions.

Of course, it probably helps that she drags him with her the third time and he immediately goes off with Colonel Sheppard, both of them grinning like children. She's never letting him accuse her of not being subtle again, ever.

Atlantis has been on Earth for four weeks, and Vala's pretty much learnt all the interesting spots to go. The best of them are unoccupied – rooms with maps to treasure that's long gone, old living quarters where Vala can half feel the people gone from them, balconies with beautiful views.

It's on one of these that she finds Atlantis' pretty young head doctor, leaning on the railing with one hand, the other pressed to her face, her shoulders shaking. Vala hesitates, wonders if she should leave her alone. She's never been very good with people crying. That said, it's getting late and cold, and the poor girl looks like she really needs a friend.

"Oh," she says when Vala steps up next to her. She wipes her eyes and sniffs, pushing her hair back from where it's stuck to her face. "I'm so sorry. Were you looking for me, I thought I turned my radio back on..." She starts fumbling for her ear, and Vala stops her with a hand on her arm.

"I wasn't looking for you," she says. "I was passing by and saw you, I wanted to make sure you weren't planning to jump."

"Oh, no!" she says – Keller, Vala remembers, though she can't remember her first name. Joanna, maybe? Whatever her name is, she wipes her face again. It doesn't do much good, since her eyes are still leaking and her nose is red. "No, it's stupid. I don't know why I'm crying, when I'm the one who broke it off."

She looks back out to the ocean and probably doesn't see Vala wince. She knows better than to get in the middle of break-ups.

"I thought he might care a bit more," Keller adds.

"Here," Vala says, offering her a handkerchief, something she learned from Mitchell. Apparently, it's gentlemanly; Vala just thinks it's kind.

"Thank you," Keller says. She blows her nose, and sort of pulls herself together. "I'm so sorry. I don't normally stand on balconies crying."

"Quite all right," Vala assures her. She's often felt like standing on a balcony and sobbing her heart out. It seems to have done Keller a lot of good. "In fact, this may be my good fortune. I was hoping to find someone to share this with." She wasn't, actually, the small bottle of potent wine from M3D 128 being far too expensive to generally share, but she can think of worse things to do with it.

"I don't know," Keller says, but she doesn't say no when Vala takes a swig and hands it over.

Keller, it turns out, is something of a lightweight, the equivalent of two glasses enough to make her giggly and tipsy. When Vala kisses her, though, hand in her soft hair, mouth tasting of blueberries, she seems to sober up very quickly, pulling away. "What are you doing?"

"I would have thought it was obvious," Vala says, smirking a little, then a little more when Keller – Jennifer – flushes.

"I shouldn't," Jennifer says, voice hesitant, body tilting back into Vala's.

"I won't tell anyone," Vala promises.

Jennifer smiles hesitantly. She kisses Vala again, almost tentative. "You could," she says, words against Vala's mouth, and Vala tries not to hope that she doesn't mean just to make her ex jealous.
